Just one of the many keen contests for the ball.

The Second Annual Australia-East Timor Independence Sports Day was held to celebrate the anniversary of East Timor's Independence. The Australians were looking to improve on the previous year's result that saw the Timorese win both soccer and volleyball.

The Timorese team had been on an aggressive recruiting drive, managing to attract South Koreans, a South American and, even, an Australian (all applying to be Timorese citizens of course!). Meanwhile, Australia, under the leadership of the Friends and Partners' own James Johnson and Joel Hodge, had also been implementing a plan to greatly improve on its poor performance last year. The teams were very even and this was reflected in the game.

The Timorese suffered an early surprise as Australia started strongly, countering Timor's usual strong start. While Australia had a good percentage of field possession and an early lead, Timor went into half-time 2-1 up. Australia's goal-keeper, Joel Hodge, had taken a break allowing Timor to capitalise with two quick goals, one a long-range shot by Timor's star striker, John Baptista. The second half was a tight struggle of fitness and skill, with Australia scoring mid-way through the second half to equalise. Australia looked as if it was getting on top, but with just over a minute to go, Timor's captain, Horacio Barreto, managed a break down one wing, capitalising on Australia's star defender, Joe Lester, being off the field. As the ball slowly rolled through the goal, it was heart-break for Australia who had come a long way from last year, with victory (or at least a draw) in sight this time.

There was plenty of lively conversation over a barbeque generously organised by James Johnson with able support from Sr Eufemia and Sr Domingas. Some of us then proceeded to Marist College Rosalie to end the day with a friendly basketball match. The teams were mixed with the team led by Sr Eufemia and comprised of Australians, Timorese and a Korean triumphing.

Another successful day for the friendship between Australians and East Timorese! As many of the Timorese students will be returning home this year, we wish all those returning home the best of luck and to know that they have friends in Australia who will treasure their friendship!
